I coach soccer because I love the sport, and have a passion to help it grow, especially in East Tennessee. Soccer has and continues to play an important role in my life. It has helped me grow into the young man that I am today. I learned a lot about life through this sport, and one of my goals is to help my team(s) grow on and off the field. My strength is my sense of humor and flexibility with is critical for effective coaching.

I want a legacy to be that I cared for my teams, and that while I was their coach I always tried my best to help them find and play their best. I want to help each one of my players grow and develop while increasing their love for the game.

Coaching Philosophy:

Main Focus For the Team:

  1. My desire is for every player to really love soccer. Having a love for soccer will make the game more fun and help them reach their goals.
  2. I want to teach the players to “see” the game. I want them to have a better understanding of the game, to be able to anticipate what the next play should be and where your teammate should be, to look 3 steps ahead.
  3. I think of the game like a puzzle. One particular player may fit that piece of the puzzle during a game one day, but another player may fit into that piece another day.

What You Can Expect from Brandon:

  1. Ultimately, all decisions are made with the whole team in mind. The decisions I make are primarily what are best for the team and secondarily what are best for the individual player.
  2. I am open-minded and willing to listen to constructive opinions. I may not always follow a recommendation, but I am always willing to listen.
  3. I want you to know you can trust me. I will be there for the boys. I will be a role model for them. I want to instill a love for soccer while building skills and character at the same time.

Goal For the Team:

The ultimate goal of the team is to be in the highest level of competitive soccer that we can achieve. Our goal is to participate in the State League ultimately leading to a Division 1 Championship, and to be the beast team in the nation. Playing time, practices, positions, tournaments, nutrition, fitness, intelligence for the game, patience, discipline, unity, respect, and character will be the focus for each player on this team and is what is demanded of them to achieve this goal. And in the process of achieving this goal, these boys will learn how to be respectable young men and good sports on and off the field.

                                                                 Ben Wilkenson

Before coming to Johnson City, ben worked as an Assistant Goalkeeping Coach for Twin City Youth Soccer Association in Winston-Salem, NC. He isam beginning work on my State and National Coaching Licenses in preparation for the National Goalkeeping License.

Ben grew up playing soccer in Nigeria.  He started playing goalkeeper in middle-school, but it wasn't until high school that he began taking it seriously.  he played four years of varsity soccer, three of them at Hillcrest School in Nigeria, where he was privileged to play against (among other teams) the Pepsi Academy and the Nigerian National Women's Team.  He also played with the Southern California Seahorses at the 2003 Donosti Cup in San Sebastian, Spain.  After undergoing surgery to repair a knee injury, he trained briefly as a member of the Carson-Newman College men's team (Div. II), before quitting soccer to pursue other interests.

He recently celebrated my one-year anniversary.  My wife is a med student at ETSU's Quillen College of Medicine.

Ben coaches soccer because he loves the game!  As a coach, there are few things more rewarding than seeing kids having fun and learning how to play.  His strengths lie predominantly in coaching goalkeepers.  There aren't many coaches out there with the experience and knowledge to effectively train keepers, even though the technical instruction is relatively simple.  Many teams don't even provide specific goalkeeper training!  But he does it because he loves the position and loves to watch goalkeepers grow in the game.

At ETSF, He'd like to be remembered as an enthusiastic coach who was dedicated to player development. He hopes he has encouraged players to work hard, support each other, and (most of all) have fun with the game!
